For most Venice arrivals, Venice Municipal Airport (VNC/KVNC) is the most direct option and is built around general aviation. It has two paved runways and Jet A and 100LL fuel on the field, plus a full-service FBO (Skyport Aviation) that supports business and corporate traffic and an active training environment.
If you need a larger commercial airport environment or additional infrastructure, Sarasota–Bradenton International Airport (SRQ/KSRQ) is the closest alternate. It’s a towered airport with longer runways and full services, but it also carries airline traffic and a busier terminal environment than Venice Municipal.

Small town, short drives, and a runway that handles more than you'd expect.
The coastal geography of Sarasota County dictates the flow of movement. Accessing the barrier islands — Casey Key to the north and Manasota Key to the south — requires navigating Tamiami Trail (US-41) and crossing drawbridges over the Intracoastal Waterway. The region’s economic and social centers are highly localized, meaning your choice of airport has a direct impact on your ground transfer times. By flying directly into VNC, you bypass the heavier traffic patterns radiating out of Sarasota and Fort Myers.
For East Coast departures heading directly into VNC, Light and Midsize jets like the Phenom 300 or Citation Excel are the best options, easily managing the 5,000-foot runway and strict weight limitations. If your passenger count or routing requires a Heavy Jet like a Gulfstream GIV, the operational strategy must shift; these aircraft require the 9,500-foot primary runway and heavier pavement ratings found at SRQ.
Winter in Southwest Florida introduces a specific meteorological variable: morning sea fog. As cooler air moves over the water, radiation fog frequently rolls onshore, dropping visibility at coastal airports like VNC below Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) minimums. To avoid holding patterns or diversions, we generally advise scheduling arrivals for the late morning or early afternoon when the marine layer has burned off.
Flights originating from the Northeast often utilize Atlantic off-shore routing to bypass the heavily congested airspace over the Eastern Seaboard. This track takes the aircraft off the coast of the Carolinas before cutting back across the Florida peninsula. Because this is overwater routing, specific oceanic survival equipment (rafts, vests) is required onboard — a regulatory detail our operations team verifies prior to dispatch.
A few things worth knowing before you fly into VNC.
If your destination is Venice Island, Englewood, or Casey Key, landing at VNC saves 30 minutes of drive time compared to SRQ. The airport is rarely congested, and your ground transportation can be waiting when you arrive. AvSky's office is in the terminal building, so we're often there to meet you.
The Legacy Trail starts at the Venice Train Depot, a short drive from VNC, and runs 18.5 miles north through Oscar Scherer State Park to downtown Sarasota. Bike rentals are available near the trailhead. It connects to the Venetian Waterway Park Trail for an additional five miles along the Intracoastal.
Boca Grande is about 40 minutes south of VNC and remains one of the quietest Gulf Coast islands — no traffic lights and no chain restaurants. It is also one of the best tarpon fishing destinations in the world from May through July. Flying into VNC puts you closer than any other commercial or private airport in the region.
Every April, the Shark Tooth Festival draws tens of thousands of visitors to the area for fossil digs, live music, and local vendors. If you're flying in during festival weekend, book early — both the airport and ground transportation get busier than usual. Outside of the festival, Caspersen Beach is the year-round destination for fossil hunting.
VNC has two intersecting runways, both 150 feet wide. Runway 13/31 is 5,640 feet and Runway 5/23 is 5,000 feet. The weight limit is 75,000 pounds single wheel and 108,000 pounds dual wheel. Aircraft exceeding the weight bearing capacity need prior permission. These dimensions comfortably handle turboprops, light jets, and most midsize jets. Noise abatement procedures are in effect at all times.
Yes. Skyport Aviation, the on-field FBO, operates a fuel farm with both Jet-A and 100LL avgas. Fuel pricing is competitive with nearby airports. For operators repositioning through Venice or planning multi-leg trips, fuel availability is not a concern. AvSky can coordinate fueling as part of your itinerary so there are no delays between legs.
VNC does not have a dedicated customs facility. International flights arriving from the Bahamas, Caribbean, or elsewhere need to clear customs at a designated Port of Entry before continuing to Venice. Sarasota-Bradenton International offers customs services and is about 20 miles north. AvSky can build the customs stop into your routing so the process is handled before you arrive.
VNC has outdoor parking for transient aircraft and limited hangar availability through the FBO. For overnight or multi-day stays, we recommend confirming hangar space in advance, especially during peak season from January through April. The airport sees about 90,000 annual operations but is rarely congested compared to SRQ, so parking a light or midsize jet is typically straightforward.
Yes. We coordinate ground transportation as part of every charter we arrange into Venice. Most destinations on Venice Island are within 10 minutes of the airport, and Casey Key, Englewood, and Boca Grande are all closer from VNC than from any other airport in the region. We can have a vehicle waiting when you arrive so there is no delay after landing.
