Experience a vibrant blend of French sophistication and Dutch energy on one island.
The island is renowned for the culinary scene in Grand Case, known as the "Gourmet Capital of the Caribbean." For beach lovers, the vibrant Orient Bay on the French side and the plane-spotting at Maho Beach on the Dutch side are iconic. Duty-free shopping in Philipsburg and high-end boutiques in Marigot offer diverse retail experiences.
Renting a car is the best way to explore both the French and Dutch sides. While the island is one territory, it has two governments, and you will notice a distinct cultural shift as you cross the open border. The Euro is the official currency on the French side and the Guilder on the Dutch side, but U.S. dollars are universally accepted.
The Phenom 300E is an exceptional light jet for the three-hour flight to St. Martin. It features a spacious, modern cabin with comfortable seating for up to seven passengers and one of the largest baggage compartments in its class, ensuring ample room for luggage for a Caribbean vacation.
The peak season runs from December to April, offering the driest and most pleasant weather. The island's premier event, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, takes place in early March and draws a major international crowd, requiring very advanced booking. The summer and fall are quieter but coincide with hurricane season.
The Island's Enduring Legacy
Overlooking the bay of Marigot on the French side, this 18th-century fort offers stunning panoramic views. It was built to defend the settlement’s warehouses of rum, salt and sugar, and its ruins are a testament to the island’s strategic past.
A private nature reserve and sanctuary nestled in the hills of Pic Paradis. It offers hiking trails, a zip-line adventure course, and a spring-fed swimming pool and lounge area, blending natural beauty with upscale relaxation.
A historic landmark and the centerpiece of Philipsburg on the Dutch side. This classic white wooden building with a cupola, originally built in 1793, has served as a courthouse, jail, post office, and fire station throughout its history.
At 1,391 feet, this is the highest point on the entire island. Accessible via a steep road and short hike, the summit provides breathtaking 360-degree views of Saint-Martin, the surrounding ocean, and neighboring islands like Anguilla.
For a direct flight from Miami, Princess Juliana Airport (SXM) is the only suitable option. Its 7,500-foot runway and full port of entry facilities can accommodate jets of all sizes. Grand Case (SFG) has a much shorter runway (under 4,000 feet) and is primarily used for smaller, regional turboprop flights from within the Caribbean.
It is completely seamless. There is no physical border or immigration check between Saint-Martin (French) and Sint Maarten (Dutch). You can drive freely between the two territories, often only noticing you've crossed by the change in road signs or architecture. This allows you to easily enjoy the distinct culture and attractions of both sides.
Absolutely. St. Martin is the primary aviation gateway to St. Barts. After arriving at SXM, we can arrange for a seamless transfer to a smaller, STOL-capable aircraft, such as a Pilatus PC-12 or Twin Otter, for the incredibly scenic 15-minute connecting flight to St. Barts' famous Gustaf III Airport (SBH).
The process is exceptionally private and efficient. Upon arrival, you will be escorted from your aircraft to a dedicated lounge within the private terminal. An agent will collect your passports and handle all the customs and immigration formalities on your behalf while you relax. Your luggage will be brought directly to you, bypassing all commercial terminal queues.
Princess Juliana (SXM) is a busy international airport. While the private FBOs provide a buffer from most commercial traffic, peak season (especially around the holidays and during the Heineken Regatta) can lead to ramp congestion. We always recommend booking landing slots and parking well in advance during these periods to ensure smooth operations.
